The city of New Westminster is the home of the 2016 Recovery Day BC Street Festival, hosting the event in the popular recovery area of 6th & 6th in UpTown, New West.

Recovery Day Society, established in 2015, is the official nonprofit organization responsible for Recovery Day B.C. The organization aims to connect people from all walks of life who have either battled with their own personal struggle of addiction or been impacted by someone close to them.

The street festival will include vendors, games, food, music, and a kid zone. The day will headline performer “Bif Naked” and her full band. TedX Style Speakers tent will include experts in addiction recovery such as Marshall Smith, from the BC Council for Recovery Excellence and Dr. Ray Baker, an expert in the Science of Recovery just to name a few. Our very own Poppi Sabhaney  will be demonstrating the art of acupuncture and recovery.

2016 Recovery Day BC

“Recovery Day is an opportunity for us in Recovery to reduce the stigma associated with addiction and where our recovery allies can join us to support this movement.,” Says Chairman of the Board Giuseppe Ganci.

The event aims to focus on celebrating our successes together, our milestones and hard work that recovery entails. In some circumstances, society has a stigma around addiction. Whether it be that we do not recover or that we are the low life addicts living under a bridge. This day marks hard work, dedication, fun, social connection and support from one another and a community.

New Westminster is already home to two local addiction treatment programs, Westminster House for Women and Last Door Recovery Society for men. The community has a tight-knit feel and recovery wins each day over addiction when we work with each other, each step of the way.  We believe that people do not just recover alone, it is the community and the unity within and from one another that allows individuals to reclaim and put their lives back in order.

“We are looking forward to connecting with other Treatment Centers who are sponsoring and supporting Recovery Day BC.” Says Susan Hogarth Executive Director at Westminster House, and member of the Recovery Day Committee.   Centers’ such as TWC (Together We Can for Men) and The Orchard Recovery Centre have aligned with Recovery Day BC by providing much needed funding and support that have contributed to the success of the Recovery Day Festival.

Recovery day is about learning how to live and be clean without the use of drugs and alcohol, it’s about owning our story and having courage and faith to be and express the person we are meant to be.

Recovery Day B.C. takes place September 10, 2016 at 6th Avenue and 6th Street New Westminster B.C. from 1-5pm. If you are interested in hosting your own booth contact [email protected].
